ODS File
OpenDocument Spreadsheet (.ods)
What is a ODS file?
An ODS file is a spreadsheet file format used by LibreOffice Calc and other apps that support the OpenDocument standard. It’s similar to XLSX, storing rows, columns, formulas, charts, and formatting.
Common uses
- Spreadsheets made in LibreOffice or OpenOffice
- Sharing sheets in an open, non-proprietary format
- Budgeting, lists, and data tables
- Charts and basic analysis
- Cross-platform spreadsheet workflows
How to open a ODS file
- Windows/macOS/Linux: LibreOffice Calc, Apache OpenOffice
- Microsoft Excel: Can open many ODS files (compatibility varies)
- Google Sheets: Can import ODS files
- Tip: If formatting breaks, convert to XLSX for better compatibility
Common problems
- Formatting or formulas change when opened in Excel
- Macros/features may not transfer perfectly
- Charts may render differently across apps
- File association issues (opens in wrong app)
- Large spreadsheets can be slow in older software
History
ODS is part of the OpenDocument Format (ODF), created to provide open standards for office documents. It became popular through LibreOffice/OpenOffice and is widely supported for spreadsheet exchange.
