Short version

Your file stays on your device. When you drop a file into the tool, the detection runs in your browser using JavaScript. The file is not transmitted to our servers during identification.

What happens when you drop a file

To identify a file, the tool reads a small portion of the file (often the first few kilobytes) and compares it against known file signatures. This processing happens locally in your browser. We do not receive the file data you drop into the tool.

Extensions vs signatures

If you paste an extension (like .png, .zip, or .psd), we look it up in a reference list and explain what it is commonly used for. This may be less accurate than signature detection because files can be renamed.

Analytics

We use analytics to understand overall site usage (for example: which pages are visited, approximate location, device type, and basic engagement). Analytics do not include your file contents. If you want maximum privacy, you can use a browser with tracking protection enabled or adjust your browser settings.

Advertising and cookies (Google AdSense)
