WEBP File
WebP Image (.webp)
What is a WEBP file?
A WEBP file is an image format designed for the web. It can provide smaller file sizes than JPG or PNG while still keeping good quality, and it supports both transparency (like PNG) and animation (like GIF) in many cases.
Common uses
- Website images that need fast loading times
- High-quality photos with smaller file size
- Images with transparency for web UI
- Animated images as an alternative to GIF
- Optimized thumbnails and previews
How to open a WEBP file
- Windows/macOS: Most modern web browsers, many image viewers
- Mobile: Usually opens in gallery apps or browsers (device-dependent)
- Edit: Photoshop (with support), GIMP, Affinity Photo (varies)
- Tip: If an app won’t open it, convert WEBP to PNG or JPG
Common problems
- Older apps don’t support WEBP (common on legacy systems)
- Transparency/animation not handled by some editors
- Some downloads save as .webp even when you expected .jpg
- Metadata handling differs between tools
- Converting to JPG removes transparency
History
WebP was introduced by Google in 2010 to reduce image file sizes on the web. Over time, browser support became widespread and WebP grew into a common format for performance-focused websites, especially for images served through CDNs and modern web stacks.
