ZIP File
Compressed Archive (.zip)
What is a ZIP file?
A ZIP file is a compressed archive that bundles multiple files and folders into one. ZIP often reduces file size and makes sharing easier. The archive preserves folder structure, filenames, and basic metadata.
Common uses
- Compressing files to reduce size for sharing
- Bundling many files/folders into one download
- Emailing or uploading groups of documents
- Packaging software releases or project folders
- Creating backups of files in a single archive
How to open a ZIP file
- Windows: Right-click → Extract All (built-in)
- macOS: Double-click to extract (Archive Utility)
- Mobile: Many file manager apps can unzip
- Tip: If you see a password prompt, the ZIP is encrypted and needs the correct password
Common problems
- Corrupt ZIP download causes extract errors
- Password-protected ZIP can’t be opened without the password
- Very large ZIPs can fail to extract on low-storage devices
- Some ZIPs include nested folders that hide the real files
- Malware can be packed inside ZIPs from untrusted sources
History
ZIP became popular as a general-purpose archive format because it’s simple, supported almost everywhere, and perfect for sharing multiple files at once. It remains one of the most common archive types online.
