DWG File
AutoCAD Drawing (.dwg)
What is a DWG file?
A DWG file is a CAD drawing file commonly used with AutoCAD and many other CAD applications. It can store 2D drawings, 3D geometry, layers, annotations, and layout information used in architecture, engineering, and design.
Common uses
- Architectural floor plans and building drawings
- Mechanical and engineering drafts
- 3D CAD models (in some workflows)
- Construction documentation and annotation
- Sharing CAD work between teams and clients
How to open a DWG file
- CAD: AutoCAD, DraftSight, BricsCAD, many CAD tools (varies)
- View: DWG viewers are available for quick read-only access
- Tip: If you only need to view/print, a viewer is often enough
Common problems
- Version mismatch (newer DWG won’t open in older software)
- Fonts/linetypes missing so text looks wrong
- External references (XREF) missing
- Large files open slowly due to complexity
- Corruption after crashes or bad saves
History
DWG became one of the most widely used CAD drawing formats through AutoCAD’s popularity. Over time, many tools added DWG support, and version changes introduced compatibility issues between older and newer CAD software.
