STP File
STEP 3D CAD Model (.stp / .step)
What is a STP file?
An STP file (also called STEP) is a 3D CAD exchange format used to share models between different CAD programs. It often stores geometry and assembly information in a neutral, widely supported standard.
Common uses
- Sharing 3D CAD models between companies/tools
- Manufacturing handoff (machining, fabrication, quoting)
- Importing parts into different CAD systems
- Archiving models in a neutral standard
- Viewing assemblies without the original CAD format
How to open a STP file
- CAD: SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Fusion 360, FreeCAD, Creo, Inventor (varies)
- View: Many free STEP viewers exist for quick previews
- Tip: If import fails, try the .step version or adjust import tolerances
Common problems
- Import errors due to complex surfaces/tolerances
- Missing feature history (STEP is usually “dumb solid” geometry)
- Large assemblies can be slow to open
- Units confusion (mm vs inches) after import
- Different CAD apps interpret edges/fillets slightly differently
History
STEP (ISO 10303) became a major CAD exchange standard to help engineering teams share geometry across different vendors. STP/STEP is still one of the most common neutral formats used in manufacturing and product design workflows.
