ISO File
Disc Image (.iso)
What is a ISO file?
An ISO file is a disc image—a single file that contains the full contents and file system of a CD, DVD, or Blu‑ray. ISO files are commonly used for operating system installers and software distribution.
Common uses
- Operating system installation media (Windows/Linux)
- Software distribution and archives
- Bootable USB creation
- Backing up optical discs
- Virtual machine install media
How to open a ISO file
- Windows: Right-click → Mount (creates a virtual drive)
- macOS: Double-click to mount (often) or use Disk Utility
- Bootable USB: Use a USB creator tool to write the ISO properly
- Tip: Download ISOs only from trusted sources
Common problems
- Not bootable if written incorrectly to USB
- Corruption/incomplete download causes install errors
- Mount option missing on older systems
- Wrong architecture (ARM vs x64)
- Security risk if ISO is from an untrusted source
History
ISO images became a standard way to copy and distribute optical disc data as software moved online. They remain common for installers and recovery media even as physical discs declined.
