IGS File
IGES CAD Exchange (.igs / .iges)
What is a IGS file?
An IGS file (IGES) is a neutral CAD exchange format used to move 2D/3D geometry between different CAD systems. It often stores surfaces, curves, and solids, but typically loses feature history from the original model.
Common uses
- Sharing CAD geometry between different software vendors
- Manufacturing handoff (machining, quoting, inspection)
- Importing legacy CAD data
- Archiving models in a neutral standard
- Moving surface models between tools
How to open a IGS file
- CAD: Many CAD apps import IGES (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, FreeCAD, etc.)
- View: IGES viewers exist for quick previews
- Tip: If you have a choice, STEP (STP) often transfers solids more cleanly
Common problems
- Surfaces import with gaps or bad trims
- Feature history is not preserved
- Units/tolerances differ after import
- Large models open slowly
- Different CAD apps interpret edges differently
History
IGES was one of the early widely adopted CAD exchange standards, helping teams share geometry long before modern cloud collaboration. It’s still used, especially for legacy workflows, though STEP is often preferred for many modern exchanges.
